Chapter 16

Lolly was lurking by her front door when Joe dropped Bren off after his day of manual labor. The kid was so filthy and dejected it almost broke her heart. But he had to learn he couldn’t get by with underage drinking and lying. Too much was at stake.

She opened the screen door as he reached the steps and before she knew what happened her six-foot-tall son was in her arms. It was a step back in time to when he was a little kid and wanted to be cuddled…

“Oh Mom, I’m so sorry.” Tears made tracks in the dirt on his cheeks. “I know I was wrong. I don’t know why we did it.” He hung his head. “I deserve to dig ditches all summer. In fact, I probably deserve to do it for the rest of the year.”

“You won’t be doing it all summer, I promise,” Lolly crooned. “Come on.” She led him into the kitchen. “Let’s have a Coke. It’ll make you feel better.” And a good talk would make her feel better, too.

She put his drink on the table. “All I want to know is how your dad’s involved in this.”

Bren gulped down half his Coke. “There was a bunch of us at the Dairy Queen when he drove up. We got to talking about things…and it kind of went from there.”

“What things?”

Bren stared at the table, blushing. “Things like how strict you are.” He looked up. “Mom, I don’t really think you’re strict. But I felt I had to go along with whatever he said. Anyway, he offered to buy us some beer and let us have the beach house. Everyone else wanted to do it, so I said okay.”

It was just about what Lolly expected. “I’m going to take some temporary legal action to keep your dad away. If he behaves, maybe we’ll figure out some way for you to see him. But if you want to be around him, Mee Maw will have to go with you. I don’t trust Wendell.”

“Mee Maw?”

“Mee Maw. She scares Wendell.”

He hugged her. “I love you, and I’ll admit Mee Maw sometimes scares me.”

Spontaneous hugs and kisses from Bren had disappeared around the time he entered puberty, so Lolly felt like they’d reached a new plateau. “And I love you, too.”

Where were all those tears coming from?
